Thank you for this article, Marc. I was researching this topic a few days ago while writing my post on friendship. I have read the story of David and Jonathan many times and it never seemed even remotely romantic or erotic to me. If anything, I wondered if it was even possible to have such a friendship and wished I had a friend like that. It made me really sad to realize how many people are willing to take a perverted interpretation to defend their own views. You said it all in "it reviles more about us than about them". C.S. Lewis will never cease to amaze me, his views on friendship just spoke to my very soul.

Those C.S. Lewis quotes in the article are spot-on, Marc. Thank you for giving the time to this. Detailed without being overlong - clear, compelling. Good work.

We have quite the friendship epidemic on our hands, don't we?

No. But anyone with enough of an agenda can read anything into a text that they want to.

This also relates to the humorous list of “ Horribly inappropriate toys they can never make today” That some of us get a kick out of. The problem is, it’s not them. It’s us they weren’t neurotically obsessive about sex. We are. We’ve been trained to be.

If the advertisers found out in the 1930s that the thought of getting our calves massaged could move product, there would be Lower legs on a billboard, Magazine page and screen, And we would all be wearing capris (except the Mormons, would would have religiously significant socks, I suppose).
